What is RLA DAY?

Rahmatan Lil Alamin (Blessings to All) Day, also known as RLA Day, is an annual observance that highlights the endeavors of the Singapore Muslim community in promoting the ethos of Rahmatan Lil Alamin, which aims to bring blessings to everyone.

Pillars of RLA Day

What is RLA DAY Stroll?

This year, the RLA Day continues to rally support towards the disability cause
and PWDs in Singapore as well as their caregivers. This is done through the inaugural RLA Day Stroll for Disability Awareness, with a gathering of kindred spirits including individuals with disabilities, dedicated caregivers, committed community partners and passionate volunteers.

Objectives of RLA Day Stroll

RLA Day centers its efforts on the disability cause, uplifting the well-being of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and their devoted caregivers in Singapore. It does so through the following initiatives:
a. Amplifying community awareness about the challenges faced by PWDs and their dedicated caregivers, fostering empathy and understanding.
b. Building robust connections between organizations supporting PWDs, caregivers, and community members, promoting engaging volunteer-beneficiary interactions and meaningful partnerships.

What will the donation be allocated for?

As part of our RLA Day awareness and engagement platforms, RLAF will be conducting its inaugural RLA Day Stroll for Disability Awareness in 2023, where there will be a gathering of kindred spirits including individuals with disabilities, dedicated caregivers, committed community partners and passionate volunteers - all united in the cause of raising awareness about disability.
Given that RLAF is a non-profit organization, we are conducting a fundraising appeal to realize the disability awareness initiative and our objectives.
Why support the disability cause?

Building inclusive communities starts with disability awareness – having a better
understanding of disabilities and the physical and attitudinal barriers that persons with
disabilities face, and challenging preconceived notions about persons with disabilities.

Every individual has an important part to play in building an inclusive Singapore – by being aware, by developing empathy, and by accepting persons with disabilities for who they are.

Caring for PWDs and their Caregivers

In 2019, the average public attitude score was 5.48/7.0, which indicates that
public attitudes were generally positive towards persons with disabilities. As for persons
with disabilities, their reported score on how included they felt in society was 3.0/5.0 in 2015, indicating that there is still room for improvement so that persons with disabilities feel more included.

RLA Day aims to contribute towards efforts of fostering positive mindsets towards persons with disabilities and encouraging inclusive behaviours in schools, workplaces and the community.

Furthermore, as households become smaller and the caregiving load is shared amongst fewer members, more families may find providing family support and care as an increasing challenge.

Based on a report by the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC), the caregiving population in Singapore stands at an estimated 210,000 and will be increasing in the future.

Additionally, with 70% of caregivers in Singapore being above 40 years old, and 10% falling between 60 and 69 years old, it is imperative that this growing group of ageing caregivers are acknowledged and appreciated.

Noteworthy Moments from Previous RLA Day Endeavors

Our inaugural RLA Forum in September 2022 witnessed the presence of 60 participants representing 25 esteemed organizations and disability-related social service agencies. It was an extraordinary gathering centered around the compelling theme of "Overcoming Challenges, Strengthening Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities."

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Mr. Faishal Ibrahim, Minister of State from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of National Development. The occasion reached new heights when visually-impaired talents from the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped astounded us with their awe-inspiring singing prowess, leaving us utterly captivated.
