Asian Emergency Floods Relief 2025 to aid Indonesia and Sri Lanka

A fundraising campaign, the Asian Emergency Floods Relief 2025, is launched from 17th December to 31st December 2025 to support urgent humanitarian efforts in Indonesia and Sri Lanka following severe floods and landslides that occurred and devastated communities.

Humanitarian Situation in Indonesia and Sri Lanka

Indonesia: Severe Floods Across Sumatra

Weeks of torrential rainfall triggered deadly floods and landslides across the Indonesian provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. According to the Straits Times, at least 1390 lives have been lost, more than 330 remain missing, and over 770,000 people remain displaced across almost 50 districts. Additionally, 156,000 homes have been damaged, leaving nearly one million individuals displaced and forced into temporary shelters.

Entire communities have been cut off due to collapsed roads, destroyed bridges, and severe infrastructure damage. Survivors urgently require emergency shelter, clean drinking water, food aid, medical support, and disease prevention, especially in overcrowded evacuation centres.

Sri Lanka: Floods and Landslides Caused by Cyclone Ditwah and the Intensified Monsoon

Since 28 November 2025, Cyclone Ditwah, along with the intensified monsoon, has caused destructive floods and landslides across Sri Lanka, resulting in close to 200 lives lost and displacing more than 100,000 people into temporary shelters. Over 20,000 homes have been destroyed, and nearly one-third of the country is without reliable electricity or clean water due to widespread infrastructure damage.

Flooding along the Kelani River continues to threaten vulnerable communities, exacerbating the urgent need for clean water, food, emergency shelter, and medical care. The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society has deployed response teams across 25 branches to support affected families.

RLAF’s Humanitarian Response

RLAF is partnering Mercy Relief and Singapore Red Cross to deliver critical assistance in Indonesia and Sri Lanka.

RLAF will pledge a total of SGD 150,000 to support relief efforts enabling partners to provide life-saving assistance to families who have been displaced, or severely affected by the widespread floods and landslides.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, RLAF’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Adnan A. Hamid, said: “The widespread devastation across Indonesia and Sri Lanka demands our urgent attention. As our neighbours face immense loss and uncertainty, we appeal to the community to come together in compassion and contribute towards relief efforts that will support essential needs and safety for affected families.”

Through this campaign, RLAF calls upon the Singapore community and the wider public to support rescue operations, first aid, the distribution of critical relief items, and rapid assessments to address urgent community needs. All contributions will go directly towards on-the-ground humanitarian relief, helping affected families receive life-saving assistance.
